In the play, Toby is old but mentally challenged. In the movies, they decided a child would be better for the role… except for this song, heh.

I love Patti LuPone and Neil Patrick Harris together! There’s some great chemistry and it’s totally adorable!

@luckycat7o7
His name is Tobias, but everyone calls him Toby for short. If you look, everyone in the movie looks different from the play
For the plays, usually they use young men instead of boys (school issues I guess)

In the original play, Toby is supposed to be a youngish adult. But the reason he seems so childlike is supposed to have a mental disability. That’s why he seems like a child and they probably changed it for the movie for PC reasons

I love the concert, but I don’t like Patti Luponer playing lovett! >=3

Actually, he does say “Mum”, as in “Mom”.
I read the screenplay; saying “mum” is a term of respect in Britain for especially kindhearted people, like a mom.
I love the irony lol
But I think that this woman did a terrible job as Mrs. Lovett. She seemed too gentle and she spoke in a sing-song voice when she only has speaking parts.

@risingdancer Well, that and the movie deliberately had to lower the ages of all of the characters. I mean, Depp and Carter don’t look that old, so they had to go younger for Anthony and Johanna and Tobias. Remember the original Mrs. Lovett was Angela Lansbury, who even then looked pretty old. In the play, Toby’s supposed to be much older than in the movie.

i actually like Patti. 0.0 i hope im not the only one lol. And i like how they did the depp version of sweeney todd with making toby a really young boy

@baixiaolang Well, actually, Johanna’s age is accurate in the film. She’s supposed to be, and was, sixteen.
I agree, though, that the rest of the ages were lowered. (although I think George Hearn might’ve been actually been younger than Johnny Depp was…)

@boieeeeeeeeeee clearly you have not seen Angela Lansbury. There’s a sing-song voice for you.
I think both Patti and Angela take getting used to. The character of Mrs Lovett is weird that way – people get really set on the FIRST WAY THEY SAW IT PERFORMED. The Sweeneys don’t have that problem as much, I think because Mrs Lovett can be played so many different ways.

@boieeeeeeeeeee Or he could be saying ma’am because they say sir
